Hebrew Vowels

Hebrew works differently from English.  The vowels are separate from the consonants, appearing underneath, to the left of, or above left of the letters.  Learning the vowels builds a strong foundation for every Hebrew language learner.  Use the examples below to learn the sounds for yourself.

Remember:

  • The vowel is always said after the consonant - except in one special case
  • The vowels always sound the same - no need to worry about words like peepul or wimin smiley
  •  There only two combined vowels sounds [diphthongs, for the grammar nerds] in Hebrew
