June Events

(Formerly The Moth)   Sunday, June 8th, 2:00 pm

Renaissance group is pleased to invite the entire CCS community, of all ages, to join us for another in our series of Sunday afternoon talks. It is the same format but with a new name – Life Unscripted! Our guest speakers (CCS members and friends) share tales of their fascinating, unusual, and surprising childhoods, backgrounds and careers. Join us!

Guest: Yury Shulman

Our speaker will recount his childhood during the brutal Siege of Leningrad, an 872-day German blockade that stands as one of history's deadliest, claiming an estimated 1.5 million lives. Considered by historians to be a genocide due to the deliberate destruction and systematic starvation of civilians, the siege tragically claimed the lives of Yury's father and grandmother. His mother faced the unimaginable task of caring for her three young children amidst these horrors, yet she persevered, keeping them alive.

As conditions eased, Yury pursued an education, was conscripted into the Russian army, and worked in the military. Later, after a decade-long wait for Soviet exit clearance, he and wife Tanya journeyed to Italy, enduring six months of financial hardship before finally reaching Boston and starting life anew.

Join us to hear Yury and Tatyana’s incredible story of resilience and the unwavering determination that propelled them toward a better future for their family.

No charge. Synagogue membership is not required.

Please bring a dessert or fruit to share. Beverages will be provided

Centerville Historical Museum, Wednesday, June 11th, 12:00 pm
Join the Renaissance group for a delicious, hearty soup lunch, interesting lecture and private
docent-led tour of the museum – all in one afternoon!

Author Nancy Viall Shoemaker will share fascinating stories from her recent book, “Women of Barnstable”, which focuses on the accomplishments of over 200 female residents of Barnstable and West Barnstable, from women who lived in the 1700s to more recent residents who have made notable contributions to our history.

Following the program, our group will be treated to a private tour of the museum, a 14-room setting that features, among many other treasures, an 1840 house, an extensive, impressive collection of historic clothing creatively exhibited, maritime and military artifacts, quilts, antique decorative arts, paintings, tools, children's toys and dolls and even a recreated 1800’s school room.

For the cherry on the top (literally), we will wind-up the afternoon with a trip to Four Seas Ice Cream Shop around the corner from the museum.

Don’t miss this wonderful opportunity! All ages are welcome!

Entrance to the museum, lunch and tour is $15. Please bring check or cash with you.
