A Scripted Career: Michael Solomowitz

Originally from Coney Island, Michael Solomowitz is an award-winning author who has enjoyed a roller-coaster writing career. His debut novel, Behind the Fourth Wall, was published in 2022. He has worked as a scriptwriter, copywriter, and sports journalist, and continues to write and direct for the theater. His plays have been staged in Los Angeles, New York, Boston, and Cape Cod. He currently serves on the board of the Cape Cod Writers Center.

Mr. Solomowitz’s writing draws from his family and Jewish upbringing. His grandfather, confronted with anti-Semitism in the Tsar’s Imperial Army, deserted and later emigrated to America. A cousin from Paris, whom he first met on his honeymoon there, lost most of her family in the Holocaust. His mother received her B.A. at the age of 58 and worked directly for M. Lincoln Schuster, co-founder of Simon & Schuster, who danced at her wedding. Although Mr. Solomowitz wasn’t observant and didn’t speak Hebrew, he graduated from an Orthodox yeshiva high school. While his classmates studied Torah and the Talmud, he wrote poetry and stories to pass the time. His musings paid off. After graduating Brooklyn College with a degree in English Literature, he spent the next 40 years as a professional writer.
